SANDLOT TO THE BIG LEAGUES…
Ryan Blakney, Major League Umpire, started his career in1992 as a Batboy for his older brother’s 15 year old All Star team that won State & Regionals gaining entry to the Babe Ruth 15 Year Old World Series.
In 1994, Wenatchee Youth Baseball chartered with Cal Ripken Baseball and he was in the Rookie League and continued to play Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth Baseball.
When Ryan was 11 he broke his arm and couldn’t play some of the year. His mom was in charge of the umpires and asked him if he would umpire a rookie league game. When he found out he would get paid $5.00 a game he was hooked.
He continued to umpire Cal Ripken, then Babe Ruth, then High School and Community College games. After he graduated from Wenatchee Valley Community College he went to the Jim Evans Umpire School in Florida in 2006, and was invited to go to PBUC School (Professional Baseball Umpire Corp.), one of 50 asked out of 250. After graduating he umpired in many leagues including the Arizona Rookie League, the Northwest League, the Midwest League, the Carolina League, the California League, the Texas League and eventually to the Pacific Coast League. In 2015 he was assigned a major league umpire number and was made one of the five rovers for the PCL. A rover fills in for an injured or vacationing major league umpire. In 2016 he continues to be a rover and as of May 7, 2016, he has umpired over 100 major league games.
Ryan is the son of Phil & Kay Blakney of Wenatchee, WA. Kay is the Assistant Regional Commissioner of the Cal Ripken Division, Pacific Northwest Babe Ruth Baseball.
